A Wartime Beginning

Born in Wembley in 1938, Michael entered the world just before Britain was transformed by the Second World War…

The Boy with the Bicycles

By the age of seven, Michael’s entrepreneurial spirit was already impossible to ignore. With his mother acting as his secretary, he bought, repaired and sold bicycles around the neighbourhood. His ambition often exceeded his stock—advertising bicycles before he owned them, then finding the perfect one after a customer had already agreed to buy. It was an early glimpse of the imagination, confidence and determination that would shape the remarkable life ahead

The Young Athlete

At Preston Manor School, Michael discovered a passion for athletics that stayed with him for life. Competing at the famous White City Stadium, he won medals in the hammer throw and high hurdles, driven by determination, discipline and a love of competition. Although his dream of combining university with sport never came to fruition, the resilience and enthusiasm he developed on the track would remain defining qualities throughout his remarkable life.

CHAPTER FOUR

The Sea Changed Everything

SEA, AND LEADING CHIEF

In his early twenties, Michael left engineering behind to follow a life of adventure. Living in Plymouth, he discovered a lifelong passion for sailing and even learned to fly a Tiger Moth aircraft. Soon afterwards, he set off across Europe in a Volkswagen campervan, camping with Bedouins in Morocco, exploring the Atlas Mountains, and eventually discovering Malta—a place that captured his heart and became his second home. From that moment on, the sea, travel and the freedom to explore became central to the life he loved.

CHAPTER FOUR

Finding His Place

Inspired by a desire to live life on his own terms, Michael returned to Bristol determined to build a future that reflected his ambition and independence. It was here that he laid the foundations of both his successful property business and a rich social life, forming lifelong friendships and creating the home, lifestyle and adventures that would define the decades to come.

CHAPTER FIVE

The Gentleman

Success was never measured by possessions alone. Michael was known for his kindness, quiet generosity and effortless charm. Whether welcoming friends for dinner, sharing a fine bottle of wine, or simply making others feel at home, he had a rare gift for bringing people together. It was these qualities, more than anything else, that defined the man so many loved.
